I first came to learn Dutch when I was 9 years old when we moved to Holland. One of the first things that struck me even at that tender age was, how through a dual lens of Dutch and English both languages would spring to life for me in a very visual and visceral way.

For example, I would be expressing one thing in Dutch, and simultaneously the English version would pop into my mind. They would both jump out at me in new ways and I would picture this coupling like a new form of chemistry merging. Both languages coming to life and making me see them differently as they forged ahead dancing dos-si-dos in my mind.

It is something I have maintained to this day, and its become one of my signature hallmarks when teaching Dutch.
